This important transatlantic port and busy commercial centre has a long maritime history, though it lost many of its old buildings as a result of heavy bomb damage during the Second World War.
 
Parts of the medieval walls have survived, including the Bargate, an impressive gateway that was originally the northern entrance to the city. Its upper floor, once the Guildhall, contains a local history museum. Tudor House, a fine timber framed building, is also a museum, and its garden has been restored to its original appearance. A partly ruined Norman house can also be seen here. The Civic Centre houses a good art gallery.
 
Southampton has no cathedral, but several fine churches escaped irreparable bomb damage. St Marys, a late 19th century building, is the mother church, and St Michaels, of Norman date, is the oldest.
