The growth of this ancient city was influenced by the Saxon Danes, and Normans, but it was the Industrial Revolution that made it a thriving commercial centre famous for fine machine-made lace.
 
Early prosperity was aided by the natural highway provided by the River Trent, a strategic advantage tat may have prompted William the Conqueror to build a strong castle here soon after his invasion of Britain. The present castle was built in the 17th century and resorted in the 19th for use as a museum and art gallery.
 
Among several good churches in Nottingham is St Mary’s a splendid example of 15th-century architecture with excellent windows and a glorious Madonna and Child painted by Bartolommeo. Other notable buildings include the 18th-century Shire Hall, the partly medieval Trip to Jerusalem Inn, and a wealth of Georgian domestic architecture.
 
The Brewhouse Yard Museum is a fascinating local history collection and in Castlegate is the Museum of Costume and Textiles. The city’s natural history museum is in Wollaton Hall, a 16th-century mansion that stands close to the university campus.
