The old county town of Northumberland, Newcastle upon Tyne was once a station on the Roman Wall, known as Pons Aelii. It is now an important university and manufacturing city.

The cathedral sows mostly Decorated and Perpendicular work. It is noted for its rare crown spire, resembling that of St Giles’ in Edinburgh.

Several interesting chapels include one in the crypt, and the organ, rebuilt in 1811, is housed in a case dating from 1710. The castle displays a resorted 12th-century keep, and the Black Gate houses a collection of local antiquities. Roman remains can be seen in the Museum of Antiquities, which is situated in the University Quadrangle.
