20 miles from Luton is the thriving industrial and commercial centre of Bedford. It was prominent in the reign of King Alfred, and was sacked and burned by the Danes in 1010.
 
A castle built by the Norman Beauchamp family was demolished in 1224, but the mound can still be seen.
 
Bedford achieved doubtful fame when, at a time of religious persecution, it imprisoned John Bunyan in the county gaol from 1660 to 1672, and again in 1676. A slab in Silver Street marks the site of the prison. Several Bunyan memorials include a statue and the Bunyan Museum, which stands on the site of the barn where he preached.
