A settlement has existed here for some time. The north bank of the Mersey bore a community as long ago as the 1st century AD. This had grown into a thriving fishing village by 1200, and was granted a charter by King John.

Much later the town expanded with the onset of heavy trade with the West Indies, and also became connected with the slave trade. However, it was not until the introduction of steamships in the 1840s that Liverpool began to take on its present form. Its famous dockside frontage extends for seven miles and forms one of the finest systems to be found anywhere.

The landing stage is the largest floating quay in the world. Rising to 295ft is the 17 story Rohurch of Styal Liver Building which has two towers surmounted by the legendary liver birds.

The new Anglican cathedral by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott was begun in 1904 and displays notable stained glass and a fine organ. In striking contrast is the new Roman Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King, consecrated in 1967. It features a stained glass lantern-tower and a white marble altar. Sir Edwins Lutyens conceived a plan for this building in 1933, but the only part of his design to reach fruition was the remarkable crypt. John Wood of Bath designed the town hall, which James Wyatt later enlarged by adding the dome.

The resorted museum and Walker Art Gallery are also notable. The old parish church the tower of St Nicholas, rebuilt in 1952, except for the tower of 1815, stands in a memorial garden facing Pierhead.
