Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and grew very quickly after the Industrial Revolution to become one of the major shipbuilding and heavy engineering centres in the world.
Traditionally Glasgow was founded by St Kentigen – also called St Mungo – who built his church here in AD543. The first cathedral was erected on the site of this church in 1136, over the remains of the saint’s body. Glasgow Cathedral is the only complete medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland. Part of the original crypt of 1197 remains, and wonderful 13th-century work survives in the choir and tower. A little to the west of the cathedral is Provand’s Lordship, which was built in 1471 for the priest in charge of the old St Nicholas Hospital, and may be Glasgow’s oldest house.
The art gallery and museum in Kelvingrove Park was opened in 1901, and the galleries contain the finer municipal collection in Britain. On Glasgow Green is the People’s Palace containing a museum which illustrates Glasgow’s domestic history.
The fascinating Museum of Transport stands in Albert Drive and houses tramcars, motor cars, horse drawn vehicles, bicycles and historic Scottish locomotives. In 1451 Bishop Turnball obtained Papal authority to start a university in Glasgow, and the first lectures were held either in the cathedral or in the Black Friars’ monastery in the High Street. The university stood in the High Street for 400 years before it was moved to its present commanding site on Gilmorehill in 1870. It includes the Hunterian Museum, where collections of early printed books, manuscripts, coins, paintings and archeological specimens are on display.
The Zoological Park lies south-east of the city near Calderpark. The Botanic Gardens cover 42 acres to the north-west of the city. Kibble Palace has a unique collection of trees and plants from temperate areas of the world.
