Until 200 years ago this great centre of culture and learning was a little more than a cluster of houses along the Royal Mile, a cobbled Castle Hill and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The foremost building here is the castle, which overlooks the picturesque streets of the Old Town and ha a history that streches back at least 1,000 years. Canongate Tolbooth dates from 1591, 15th century John Knox’s house was built by goldsmiths to Mary Queen of Scots, and 17th-century Gladstone’s Land features rooms decorated with fine tempra paintings. Lady Stair’s House is a restored 17th-century building housing a museum, and off Canongate is 16th and 17th-century Holyroodhouse Scotland’s finest royal palace. Ruins of the 12th-century Chapel Royal foundation adjoins the palace.
