Cardiff displays the mixture of dignity and pragmatism to be expected from the capital city and culture centre of Wales. Massive expansion resulted in the city becoming the world’s largest principal coal port by the start of the 20th century, and much of its present-day appearance can be directly attributed to this era.

One family particularly involved in the city’s growth was the Butes, who built the vast docks, sank a fortune into the development of the city as a living and working community, and the full castle. The latter, an appealing mixture of genuine period remains and 19th century reconstruction, was the brain-child of the third Marquess, working with architect William Burges. Inside the perimeter walls the handsome norman keep surmounts a mote surrounded by a defensive moat. In direct contrast, and well distant in a ‘gothick’ complex, are 19th-century living quarters that reveal the full expression of romantic medievalism so loved by Bute and the famous Burges. Cardiff’s principal building stand quite close to the castle in Cathay’s Park and include the City Hall and Count Hall, the University College and the National Museum of Wales.

The Llandaf district is situated north-west of the city centre and be reached through some of Cardiff’s elegant parks. Here in a village-like setting, is the city’s cathedral, an historic building which was almost destroyed by the ravages of time but is now fully restored to its old splendor. Other interesting features of the city includes famous Cardiff Arms Park Ruby Ground.
