This important and historic city on the River Avon has been a harbor since Anglo-Saxon times. The Normans built a castle here, and during the 15th and 16th centuries ships from Bristol traveled the world in search of new commonalities such as tobacco, wine and chocolate – still staple raw materials of the city’s manufacturing industries.

The Victoria era saw the launching here of Brunel’s great ships; today the restored Great Britain – the largest ship of its time – can be seen in Bristol again, having been brought back from the Falklands Islands, where she was wrecked almost a century ago.

Many of the city’s old buildings suffered heavy bomb damage in the Second World War, but among those that survived is the imposing cathedral, originally the church of the 12th – century abbey but much altered and extended in later centuries.

Equally well known is the church of St Mary Radcliffe, noted especially for its rib-vaulting and its usual north doorway. Among Bristol’s nonconformist churches is Wesley’s chapel, the oldest Methodist chapel in the world, built by John Wesley in 1739.
